Fly fishing is a great method of fishing that is enjoyed by thousands of people worldwide. There is something about wading through shallow streams and rivers out in the wilderness looking for fish and then casting a fly on top of them in an attempt to make them feed.

Fly fishing is a solitary pursuit with the angler attempting to outwit the fish and make the fish think the artificial fly is a mosquito or insect that is safe to devour. It is a method of fishing that involves a lot of skill that can take many years to build up and develop.

The challenge in fishing is catching fish on the lightest tackle possible so you can do battle with the fish and have some fun. When using heavy lines fish can simply be dragged to the bank, which is not fun, but since fly fishing often uses very light tackle the angler usually experiences a lot of feeling when playing fish caught on a fly. Whilst you can fish light with a lure fighting a fish on the lure is simply not the same as fighting one on a fly.

Fly fishing is more of an art form, and as such it is very rewarding catching a fish on the fly, especially when it is a homemade one. Lure fishing does not have the same aura about it and it is a much more mechanical method of fishing.

Fly fishing is a visual method. The angler casts the fly and then watches it, waiting for the fish to rise and take the fly. This waiting process can get very tense, especially when fish rise to the fly only to ignore it and decide not to take it once it gets to. Because of this fly fishing can be very tense and is an exciting method of fishing. When lure fishing the angler seldom gets to see the lure, therefore there is no anticipation or the “will it or won’t it?” factor and the excitement only really begins when the fish is hooked and the fight begins.

A fly can be used in rivers that are extremely shallow. Some rivers are exceptionally shallow, almost to the point where it seems impossible that a fish could live, let alone swim around freely in, yet despite this there are fish present. In these types of water lure fishing would be impossible as the lure would sink to the bottom and be dragged back to the angler on the retrieval which is likely to scare the fish rather than entice them to attack the lure.

Because a fly is fished on the surface of the water or just below the surface it is an ideal method for waters that contain lots of rocks, such as fast flowing rivers and streams. Rocks divert the flow of water and create natural eddies and pools which often attract many fish. A fly would simple float on the surface of the water and would never get caught up in the rocks. Lure fishing in these conditions would be difficult and probably not possible since a lure would snag up and possibly result in a line break, rather than catch a fish.

Fly fishing is a more traditional way of fishing and it is more nostalgic than lure fishing and it is this that attracts many anglers. Whilst the fish caught on a fly may not be as big as fish caught with a lure the fight is more fun as the tackle is generally that much lighter, but then again it’s not the size of the fish in the fight but the size of the fight in the fish, therefore fly fishing is a very rewarding form of fishing.

Fly Fishing Morgan Run with The Troutmen

default Fly Fishing Morgan Run with The Troutmen

Fly Fishing. Here is the final cut of the Fly Fishing Morgan Run Episode. This episode will be broken into two parts since I prefer to keep each movie under 10 min. I can only hold your attention for so long. Besides it takes me hours and hours in the editing room to produce a few minutes of final work. So for the sake of my sanity I will break this into two parts. I adjusted the music on this final cut since earlier versions felt too slow. I love the "how you like me now" track. Tell me what you think, I love all the responses I've received so far it keeps me motivated to make more! Enjoy!

Daniel W. Galhardo, founder of Tenkara USA and Masaki Nakano go tenkara fly-fishing in the Sierra Nevada. Tenkara is the traditional Japanese method of fly-fishing, ideal for mountain streams. In tenkara one uses only a rod, line and fly, no reel is needed for stream fishing. Originally it was practiced by commercial/professional fishermen in the mountain streams of Japan, who used to catch fish for a living.

Question by Steven J: The proper way to nymth fishing " fly " ????
What do you do ? Do u cast out and let the river/stream take it . please someone give me a little insight .

Answer by produent
It depends on which insect your fly is imitating. Many different water-going insects have a nymphal stage of life, after which they may or may not leave the water. Typically, if you have a wet fly it will be larger and without wings, so that it may sink under the surface of the water and drift with the current. In this case, you are not meant to be recasting often.

If you have a dry fly, then it will be much smaller and lighter, and probably have wings attached. This means it won't sink - which is fine, because this is meant to imitate a flying insect caught in the water. These are the flies that you will recast often, allowing the fly to prick the surface of the water several times and then sitting it down for a second or two. To a fish, this looks like an insect has been buzzing around above the water, and has finally fallen in.

Check your gear and find out what sort of fly fishing you would like to be doing. It is possible to use a medium weight line and keep flies for both wet and dry fishing, but more effective is to get two reels and use heavier line with the wet flies.

Fly fishing rod action explained.

When we go fishing, unless we use bobbers, the only way to tell when there is a bite is when the rod’s tip bends a few times in quick succession.  In order to be able to feel those bites when fishing for predominantly smaller fish, like speckled trout or Arctic grayling, is by using a lighter weight tackle setup, with a light-action fly rod.  The action in a fly fishing rod is, basically, how much pressure the rod can take before breaking.

There are three basic fly fishing rod action levels; fast action, or tip-flex, medium action or mid-flex, and slow action, or full-flex.  You want to use the right flexibility, or action, for the environment you are fishing, like fast rapids or a slow moving, deep pool, ocean surf or calm lake shorelines.  Also included in the equation is the type and size of fish, as some fish fight more aggressively, and some strike the bait harder than others five times their size.

Slow action fly rods will bend more acutely and freely, especially at the tip-end of the fly rod.  These rods are meant for fishermen who will be needing to cast more accurately and in smaller locales.  A slow action fly rod could be compared to an ultra-light or even a feather-light fishing rod and reel, and make catching smaller fish a lot more fun, and more challenging.

Medium action fly rods will offer a slower line speed than the heavy action rods, and is a more versatile and all-around usage fly rod.  This provides action for all ranges of fish, weather and environments.  From short and accurate casts to casts in heavy winds, the medium action fly rod is not only the best for beginners, it is also the most popular fly rod action sold.

Fast action fly rods will offer a more stiff rod, with only the tip of the rod bending during casting.  Casts are further than the other action rods, with more line let out and a faster line speed.  These types of fly rods are meant for more experienced fly fishermen who are after larger and trophy fish.

If you are fishing for bigger fish, like lake trout, Atlantic salmon, rainbow or steelhead trout, and other larger predatory fish, and more often than not find yourself fishing in open or extremely windy conditions, then you should start off with a fast action fly rod.  If you prefer creeks and narrow rivers, fishing for smaller fish using lighter tackle, a slow action fly rod would be your best beginner fly rod.

If you are a beginner, you should start with a medium action fly rod, and then decide if you want more or less action, and more accuracy or further casts.  Most fly fishermen will either carry all three action levels of fly rods, or the two extremes, slow and fast action.

Question by Brendan: Does anybody know if the fishing lure "bite light" actually works?
Its been banned in one state and has been said to outfish many anglers favorite baits, but does it actually work?

Best answer:

Answer by unmamfqlm
That sounds like nothing more than a sales pitch to me. There's one particular article which is printed when a new so called "revolutionary" bait comes out that states what you said in your question. It says something along the lines of, "the bait produces so well that it has been banned from tournament use and in "blank" state and outfishes live bait 7 to one". Something close to that anyways. Regardless, it's a sales pitch. I'm not sure how it's not considered false advertising or something similiar, assuming this is where you seen this. I've seen the same exact article for the Banjo Minnow system, Walking Worms, and several other infomercial type lures.

To answer you're question, I honestly don't know. Common sense tells me probably not. It may produce a few more hits in murky water or when fishing at night but not many. Fish see incredibly well in all water conditions compared to humans for example. Just because it is dark outside or the water is murky doesn't at all mean a fish can't see a normal lure. Yes, their vision would be decreased but they're not "blind" by any means. You would be better off throwing a noisier bait in these condtions. You can throw any rattle equipped lure or top water lure and catch just as many Bass as you would durring ideal conditions.

It does not necessarily have to be that the individual must purchase all the latest gear to enjoy this sport. On the contrary, some people still have poles that were handed down to them from previous generations. However, by getting a pole that has modern materials, the angler can try out something new every now and then and see if he can become more successful at catching something wonderful.

Buy the Award Winning 'Esca Lures' online at http://www.innovativefishingtackle.co.uk/

The carbon fiber poles, for example, are much stronger and flexible than the older wooden poles which did not have so much give in them. The new poles allow for a much wider arc and this will surely help those who have managed to hook a big catch. Even power assisted winding mechanisms can help those with weak hands and wrists so it is wise not to eliminate this new equipment without first trying it out.

Although angling has always been considered a manly sport, many more women are taking it up these days and this also gives them the opportunity to go along with the husband when he wants to spend some time on the water. This can be on the river but it can also be on the ocean too.

Deep sea angling is so popular these days that even those who travel abroad will always try to get some angling in at one point or another. Catching a shark or tuna is great for those who have never had the opportunity before and the whole event is made memorable by catching something huge. Indeed, this is where great photo opportunities abound and many keen anglers will have several large catches in photographic form for sure.

Any novice who is keen to understand the art of angling will need some 'how to' books or a DVD or two. These not only tell him why he has to use a particular lure, it also demonstrates the throw that is needed to entice the specimen onto the hook. It will also list the types of tools and equipment that he needs as a basic collection to get him started in the game.

Indeed, if this is a complete novice, then he really needs to buy a few 'bundles' of equipment, on offer at most online stores, to save a few dollars while he is concentrating on the art itself. In this way, he can figure out if the sport is really for him or not.

cache:fu_IvJh9dSYJ:ezinearticles.com/?10-Signs-You-Need-New-Fishing-Tackle&id=4021317 - Google Search5 Reasons You Need a New Fishing Rod

If you're a keen angler, then you may already know how you can benefit from having several fishing rods.

1. Different types of fishing require different types of rods. There are dedicated fishing rods for catching trout and salmon, whilst fishing at sea, and for those wanting to catch bigger fish. Perhaps your style of fishing has changed. Maybe you've moved house and are now nearer the sea, or a river. Your old fishing tackle may now not be the most suitable or appropriate for your new type of fishing.

2. Rivers, lakes, and streams all present different terrains and different sorts of fish. Having the right sort of fishing rod for the right conditions will help you to be prepared and give you a better chance of catching more fish. If you're fishing rivers, you may be standing in the river for a long time whilst trying to catch fish. Having a lightweight rod can make a difference. Maybe you're going to be sat on the bank all day, so a heavier rod might be more suitable.

3. If you fish all year round, you may prefer a different rod at different times of year. You might need a holiday rod, or one that you can let the children use. Some people also like to have a longer rod when fishing in higher water, as they find it easier to control. This is especially important when you consider you could be in the water for several hours.

4. Perhaps you just want to keep up with new technology, and advances in rod technology. There are many recent advances in fishing rod technology, and in other areas of fishing tackle. Perhaps you fish a lot and get a lot of use out of your fishing tackle. Maybe you do genuinely need new fishing equipment, and a new fishing rod is high on your list.

5. If you're a lapsed angler, and haven't been fishing for ages, perhaps some new fishing tackle will inspire you again. Maybe you've only just started fishing, and have been used a friend's old rod until you decided that you needed to buy your own fishing tackle. Maybe you're old fishing tackle has been stored at the back of the garage for years, and is past its best.

Having different fishing rods makes sense. Having the right equipment for the right situations is likely to make you enjoy fishing more, and get better at it. You're bound to lose enthusiasm if your equipment is old and has seen better days. Why not see what your local fishing shop has to offer?
