What type of fishing rod should I buy?

I want to take up fishing as I live close to a river, I know how to fish as I learned when I was younger. My problem is that I have no idea what type of rod to buy. The rules on fishing in this river say no spinning, bait fishing only and no floats. This river has Salmon, Perch, and Pike. I have no idea if that helps but I'll tell you anyway. I had no idea how many types of rods there were and I need some help.

Thanks In Advance,

JD

Is the river current strong, if so, go with something sturdy, not one that has a lot of bend in it. Can't go wrong with the Shakespear Ugly Stick.

What are the parts of the fly fishing rod?

I just got a fly rod the other day and it broke on our camping trip. I have to send in a form and I am not sure what the parts are the fly rod? Does anyone know the a website that has a picture of a Fly fishing rod and it shows the names of the parts of the fly rod?

Hope this helps.

I am wanting to get my boyfriend a beginner's fishing set for his birthday. He is planning to start fishing in a canal (we are hiring a boat for our honeymoon). I think a telescopic rod might be good.

Have any fishermen (or women) got any suggestions for a good rod/reel/set to buy ?

Thanks

I would go with a Ugly Stick, Shakespear combo. Which will only run you about $30 and you can get a Wal-Mart, very sensitive rod and reasonably dependable reel with good casting. Great for beginners.

An all purpose rod would be preferred; surf, pier and freshwater fishing are all possibilities. All input welcome.

Can you use a normal fishing rod for ice fishing?

Can you use a normal fishing rod for ice fishing? I don's want to go out and buy a ice fishing pole so can anyone give me some advice for using normal rods for ice fishing?

Is it physically possible to, yes but realistically you really can't, at least not effectively. You need to be closer to the hole to detect the lighter winter bite and get a good hook set. The size of most ice shacks rules out the use of long rods when you're in them. You can use your reels off your regular rods and ice fishing poles are very reasonable. I have a "noodle" rod that just has 2 pegs, 3" apart, that you just unwind to the desired depth. It is very sensitive and i don't need a spring bobber on it. When I catch a fish I just pull it in hand over hand after I set the hook. I think it cost me $7 or so. Good luck!

i bought a fishing rod, but i dont know how to pick it up to use it....
i select 'grab' when the option comes up and drag it into my person, but when i return to the main screen to use it, i go to pick it up and it just goes back in my pocket.
help?

your dropping it you have to click use it or carry it

take it to your person and equip it nook explained how to do it

same process as your net watering can and shovel
they made it all the same which is great

Any information on a Montague 6208 fishing rod?

I recently bought a new house, and left behind in the garage was a Montague 6208 fishing rod. I know absolutely nothing about fishing, but can anyone on here give me any useful information about this rod - what type of fishing is it used for, what is it made of, where would it have been bought, etc etc? I'd be grateful for any information.

without seeing the rod, it is hard to tell. l can't find anything on a 6208 rod. l can't find much about montague. my best guess would be a 62 inch long baitcasting model perhaps for an 8 thread linen line (24 lb test), built for bass fishing. if it looks like bamboo and has 6 sides, it probably IS bamboo. if it is fairly heavy and semi clear, it's solid fiberglass.
l think they may have made some metal rods... check it with a magnet... but if it was made from copper as some rods were (beryllium copper), the magnet won't tell. if it is round and relatively light, it would most likely be tubular glass. glass rods would be post WW II. on many metal rods the guides were wrapped with wire.

How important is the rod/reel when fishing?

Well my friend dished out $900 for a fishing rod. People always say how a good rod is very important. But in my opinion it has little importance. Of course you need a good enough rod to get the fish on the beach, but a rod won't make the fish bite.

Is there something I'm not seein about how the rod is important?
I fish with a 25 dollar walmart rod... it works the same as any other rod.

Your opinions?
Its was a 300 st croix rod, and a 600 reel,

I agree, (to a certain degree), with your hypothesis.

A guy with a $40 combo can catch as many fish as a guy with a $400 outfit.

(The fish don't know what kind of rod & reel you own!)

HOWEVER, there are some major differences in your $25 rod and a $300 St. Croix.

#1. A $300 rod will be 70% lighter than a $25-$90 rod, thus making it EXTREMELY sensitive comparably. A 70% more sensitive rod will transmit strikes easier allowing the fisherman a tremendous advantage over an angler fishing with a $25 "stick", (lol).

#2. Durability- St. Croix, G. Loomis, Sage, Etc (all your most expensive rods) generally have a LIFETIME warranty, (and in some cases, all you have to do to get your new rod is to send in your old, broken one to the company). Rods wear out quicker than reels. Good rods wear out slower, (period).

Have you ever heard the expression," The difference is like night and day!"

Try fishing with your friends outfit and FEEL the difference! It's gonna feel like......well you know.......

Reels?

I don't even know of any decent reel's that are under $50!

Why would someone spend more than $50 for a reel??

1. As a reel escalates in price the quality of the materials and design escalates.

A $200-$500 reel will be 50-60% "smoother", (which will transmit strikes easier through the reel), have a 50-60% better drag system, be made out of better, more non-corrosive materials and generally be nicer to fish with over a $50 reel.

Do you think there's a difference between a Ford Ranger and a Lamborghini Diablo???

Both cars transport you to your destination................................

Personally, I'll take the Diablo!
